We started the day at San Miguel church, built in 1610 (left) and the Loretto Chapel, commissioned by the archbishop of Willa Cather’s book fame and home of the miraculous staircase (right and below).
The staircase was built by a mysterious carpenter who showed up the ninth day of a novena to St. Joseph the sisters were praying for a staircase. He built the staircase and disappeared without asking for payment. It seems impossible that it can stand, given that it has no central support. It was very beautiful and interesting.
Then we headed to Los Alamos to the Bradbury Science museum where we learned about the Manhattan Project and the current work of the lab. It was a great museum.
Across the ridge, we went to Bandelier National Monument. A canyon where many ancestral Pueblo people lived for over a thousand years.
Headed back for some hotel swimming. Now we’re all exhausted!
