January 16

We slept in again today. This was our whirlwind Holy Door day. We wanted to go through the other 3 Holy Doors in Rome. We had already gone through St. Peter’s Holy Door twice—Sunday on the way to Mass and Thursday on the way to Mass.

We took the Metro for our longest ride to St. Paul outside the walls. Very imposing and beautiful church. Quieter than St. Peter’s and it seemed bigger, though I don’t think it is.

When we got back to central Rome, we were really hungry so we stopped at the Drunken Cow to eat. Good food and nary a cow, drunk or sober, in sight.

Then off to Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major). It was older and smaller and not as majestic.

On the way down the hill to St. John Lateran, we stopped at St. Alphonsus church to see the original 1400’s Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon. They were prepping for a concert, so we couldn’t get close.

St. John Lateran. I think it’s the oldest papal basilica.

Here are Mark’s pictures, out of order.

Charlie, pretending to go to confession. The confessionals had lists of what languages the priests would hear confession in.

Back home again with a lovely sunset to look out upon.

And some liquid refreshment!
