Today we got up early and went to Trajan’s Column (first picture below) to meet Alexander for a “Mysteries of Rome” tour. We first went to the Church of the 12 Apostles and saw the tomb of Sts. Philip & James. They did not die in Rome, but were brought here later. Then we saw where Michaelangelo was supposed to be buried, but long story—he is buried in Florence.
2 pictures from later in the tour—the statue on the left was carved by Michaelangelo except for the head which someone finished later. It was totally obvious that the head was not done by the same person who carved the body. That statue was in Santa Maria sopra Minerva (St. Mary over Minerva—there had been an temple where the church was built). The picture on the right is a bronze cast of the Pieta by Michaelangelo. It was very cool to see it. That was in San’Andrea dei Valle.
Alexander took us to a restaurant for lunch—another no menu place run by Nonna who had worked there for 57 years. We had to be sure to clean our plates or Nonna would get mad. Under her restaurant, they excavated a ruin that is where Caesar was killed, but of course, I forget what it was called. A theater, I think. After lunch we wandered over to Piazza Nuvona with the fountain of the four rivers in the middle.
