This was our day to go to the Vatican Museums. We went by ourselves with no tour guide but I had bought tickets on-line so we didn’t have to wait in the really long lines to get in. Phew!
The Vatican museums are overwhelming. I heard an incredible statistic about if you spent 1 minute in front of each item in the museums you would spend ages and ages in the museums. Sorry I can’t remember the precise number. It was astonishing!
There were Egyptian artifacts. By the way, most of these things were gifts from someone or another to the pope. Many Egyptian things came over during the classical Roman period and then the descendants would gift them to the popes over the years.
Ceilings and floors and walls were incredible! All over, even hallways.
A hall of maps of Italy. Arial maps done in the 1500’s or 1600’s.
There were many Roman statues. Many. Many.
Look at the building with the green shutters. It’s our apartment building—we could see it from a window in the museum!
Imagine how big that statue was if the toe is that size!

We had lunch at the restaurant Monica & Michael recommended. Dino & Tony’s. We think this is Tony, but he didn’t have a lot of English and we didn’t have a lot of Italian. We went with my friend Vanessa and her son who had come down from Northern Italy to visit with us. It was great—the lunch and the visit. Dino e Tony’s doesn’t have a menu. You take what they make. It was fine with us!
Eddie & Charlie started running fevers that afternoon so we had quiet afternoon and evening. Turns out they were getting a cold, which they ended up sharing but Marty & Mom didn’t get it until after the trip.
