Thursday at the Zoo

Today Charlie & I went to see Marty in action with the penguins. It was a great day to go to the zoo.

The penguin exhibit also has pink-backed pelicans—see below. We saw them being fed too. And we saw one stealing a fish from a penguin. Nasty birds!

Here he comes!

Marty was tallying what birds ate what while Maria was feeding them. They started out throwing fish in the water.

And then sat down to hand-feed.

A volunteer kept up a running commentary and I learned many interesting things about South African black-footed penguins. Maryland Zoo has the largest colony outside of S. Africa. There are 70 birds.

This was Marty laughing (although he was trying not to) at a little girl’s question, “How long have African-American penguins lived on earth?”

Charlie got bored. It took about 25 minutes to feed the penguins.

Soon we were off to other things.

Fun on the swinging bridge.
