Today was Historic St. Mary’s City Homeschool Day. St. Mary’s City is in Southern MD and was the first colony in MD and the first successful proprietary colony in the US. It was a grant to Lord Baltimore who was Catholic and who founded the colony under principles of religious freedom. Later, that was changed by Protestants who had moved into the colony and in 1704 the Act to Prevent the Spread of Popery was passed and it pretty much was the end to religious freedom in MD for a while. St. Mary’s City was abandoned in the 1720’s and became very rural and agricultural. In the 1900’s archaeological studies began uncovering the first settlement and now they have a really neat living history museum on the site.
